George Garga, a book clerk, and Shlink, a wealthy lumber merchant, are locked in a fight to the death, trying to prove that they can bet absolutely everything except their freedom. Shlink tries to buy Garga's opinion on a book, but Garga refuses to sell it. As a result, Shlink declares war on him and starts a game that will destroy both men, their businesses, and their family only to find out if two men can be touched intimately by hate.
